How to measure Lmin and Lmax
What you measure
Lmin is the shortest length of the shaft, fully compressed. Lmax is the longest length of the shaft, fully extended. The difference between Lmax and Lmin is the working stroke.
Why this matters: too short and the spline can separate during suspension travel. Too long and the shaft can bottom out and load the transfer case or axle flange. Correct range means smoother travel, less vibration, longer U-joint life.
Quick sanity check order
Measure the length range first. Then confirm flange pattern and the U-joint cross size. If one of these is unknown, take a clear photo and include a tape measure in the picture.

Common flange reference
Common flange reference used on many UAZ shafts: flange 72-2203023 (smooth, square style). Flange connection: 4 holes of 10.3 mm. Pitch circle diameter across opposite holes (D1): 80 mm. Center spigot diameter (D2): 60 mm. Spigot height (h): 2 mm. Outer flange diameter (D): 103 mm. Distance between opposite bolts (A): 50 mm.

Common U-joint cross reference
Common U-joint cross reference: 3102-2201025-01, 34-2201025, 69-2201025-02, 72-2203025-02, 72-2203025RN. Bearing cap outer diameter (D): 30 mm. Trunnion diameter (d): 16.3 mm. Overall width across caps (H): 88 mm.

Driveshafts with CV joints (instead of U-joints)
What to know
There are UAZ driveshafts that use CV joints instead of U-joints. They can run very smooth with less vibration. For heavy off-road use we usually do not recommend them, because torn boots or dirt inside the joint can end the trip quickly. If you run mostly road and light gravel, a CV style shaft can be an option.
If your UAZ sees deep mud and heavy off-road, a classic U-joint shaft is usually the safer choice.
