Lubrication of U-Joints & Driveshafts on Your UAZ

A well-lubricated drivetrain is essential to keep your UAZ in top condition. The U-joints and splines on the driveshafts take a beating during off-road driving. Regular greasing prevents wear, slack, rust, and vibration issues.

Why Grease?

U-joints contain needle bearings that rely on proper lubrication to avoid metal-on-metal contact. Without grease, they wear rapidly, leading to play, noises, or even seized joints.

For vehicles driven through water, mud, or sand, greasing is even more critical. Fresh grease pushes out dirt and moisture, keeping the bearings protected.

Grease Point Overview – UAZ 4x4 (Bukhanka, 469, Hunter)

# Location Component
1–3 Door hinges & stops Prevents squeaks and wear
4–7 Steering rods + ball joints Maintains steering precision
8–10 Front axle U-joints Prevents play and vibrations
11–13 Rear axle U-joints Protects against overloading and wear
14 Center bearing (if fitted) May include grease nipple
15 Driveshaft slip yoke/spline Prevents sticking or knocking
16–18 Handbrake levers Inside cabin and underbody
19–21 Gear shift linkages Improves shifting feel
22 Clutch linkage rod Between pedal and fork lever
23–25 Pedal linkages Brake, clutch, accelerator
26 Steering box and joints Affects steering response
27 Transfer case selector linkage Often neglected, prone to stiffness

Total: 20–25 grease fittings on a typical UAZ depending on version and transfer linkage.

How to Grease Properly

  • Use a quality grease gun with EP2 lithium- or calcium-based bearing grease
  • Needle adapters help with tight spots and flush-mounted zerks
  • Grease until fresh grease oozes out of seals or joints
  • Clean the fittings with a cloth before attaching the gun (dirt + grease = lapping paste!)
  • Move the vehicle slightly to access hidden nipples if needed

Recommended Greasing Intervals

  • Normal use: every 10,000 km or once a year
  • Off-road, wet, or dusty conditions: every 3,000–5,000 km or after each major trip

UAZparts Pro Tips

🔧 No grease gun yet? We offer complete kits with gun, cartridge, and needle adapter.
🧼 Dirty nipple? Clean it with brake cleaner before greasing to avoid pushing grit inside.
📏 Vibration while driving? Unlubricated U-joints are one of the most common causes.
📦 Need replacement zerks? Check our grease fitting replacement kits.
🪛 Hard-to-reach linkages? Use a flexible grease hose and slim needle tip.
📷 Not sure which ones you've done? Snap a photo of the chart or underside before starting.
🛞 Rotate the steering wheel or pedals slightly after greasing to distribute the grease.
